ReplyDelete932126165 "Diamonds are Forever" is a saying used by many. It's the title and theme song in James Bond as well as the base for Kanye's "Diamonds of Sierra Leone". Diamonds are more of a symbol than anything, they are only worth something because we give it value. The stone is rare and often found inside volcanoes, so someone has went through a lot of work to obtain it. The person buying it has spent a lot of time to work for that money so he can give it to his soon to be bride. Guys want to get it because it makes a lady feel special and shows that you care enough about her to spent the rest of your life with her. A diamond is forever because marriage is meant to be forever. Both marriage and diamonds are the toughest materials known to man.
ReplyDelete932126165 I was right but to conclude...diamonds are just a symbol with a slogan made by corporations to find a use for these diamonds. They made them rings and bing bang boom, we have a new wedding tradition. You can choose to adopt this or you could symbolize something completely different in your relationship and put the money towards something more meaningful. Also the bigger the ring, the more noticeable it is and more expensive it is, the more noticeable it is, the more men will back off of your lady because that means she's taken and the corporation gets more money by marketing it this way.

I do not literally think that “Diamonds are forever” as opposed to what the statement symbolically means. I think diamonds are forever in relation to what a diamond represents like marriage and living out your life together with someone you love. Usually a diamond is used for marriage or a gift to your significant other to show them that you care, and you want to spend “forever” with them. I think a diamond is a girl’s best friend because of the value todays society has put on them. In todays society if you have diamonds you are somewhat wealthy or seen as wealthy all together. So not only are diamonds a girl’s best friend since they speak for themselves and kind of separate you class wise, I think when you see a diamond it also represents a joyous occasion like a wedding, anniversary, etc. I think guys want to buy “her” a diamond because it will bring joy to a loved one of theirs. I also think that guys like buying diamonds for “her” because it makes a statement that they are wealthy.

ReplyDeleteI would say diamonds are not forever, they can be scratched ,chipped, and cracked those are a coupe way just to scratch the surface about how a diamond can not last forever. Also, in this case think of a diamond as a relationship if the couple has a strong bond it could be as strong as the diamond itself. However, if the relationship is unhealthy and not working out it could be just as weak as a diamond if you’re not careful about how you take care of it. I believe diamonds in this day have a positive meaning behind them because when people propose to one another it usually with a diamond. To show how much they love somebody and how strong their bond is and want to spend the rest of their life together.

My response to the question at the beginning of the semester I now know is incorrect after going through this course. The reason why people know the quote “a diamond is forever” is because in the 1940’s a company called De Beers found saw their diamond business decreasing in earnings. De Beers had gone to New York to meet with an advertising company called N.W Ayer. The incredible market these two company have created is remarkable and is still around today. They started to show movies with men proposing to women with a diamond ring as a form of advertisement. These two companies created a whole market and established how men propose to women to all through the availability heuristic. The quote says “a diamond is forever” because who wants to buy a used wedding ring or jewelry that was made for someone else. Diamonds in the case of a wedding ring is a women’s best friend because it physically shows the amount of love in the size of a diamond. Wedding rings are expensive and normally men must save up to buy a diamond ring, and it shows a sign of commitment. Finally, what the first thing you need to do when you buy a car, get car insurance right so why not the same with your spouse. It is the same reason why a man buys a woman a wedding right to protect their investment and it show that women are off the market. Now when other men see that she has a wedding ring on they know she has a husband.

DeleteI think the phrase “Diamonds are forever” is a symbolic statement because a physical diamond can be destroyed. Ingenious advertisement in the 1900’s created a value around a diamond that cannot be lost and made people seem included in the out group if they did not purchase an engagement ring during a proposal. Ingenious advertisement in the 1900’s also engrained diamonds so closely with engagements that it is the normal in today's society. The article describes exposing the public to this “diamond phenomena” by letting celebrities and iconic figures wear diamonds to build their value to the public. Due to great advertising and societal value put on diamonds from an advertising plan implemented in the 1900’s, diamonds have been engrained into engagements until this day. The slogan “Diamonds are forever” will essentially last forever until the societal value behind diamonds start to decline. I think the ladies want the diamond because it’s so closely related with an engagement. Another reason why ladies want the diamond is because of the societal value put on diamonds and if there is an engagement, there is an expectation that a diamond is going to be there. Finally, ladies want the diamond because it shows a sign of wealth in society because diamonds are considered “expensive”. I think guys want to get the diamond for her because again it shows a sign of wealth today. Also, guys want to buy her a diamond because if a woman is wearing an engagement ring it shows that she is essentially off the market dating wise.

ReplyDeleteI am not sure as to why people say "A diamond is a girls bestfriend" because not all girls are the same. It is generalized that a girl should love diamonds and bling and everything shiny, but in my case I know I am the complete opposite. I love the mud and getting dirty and rarely wear jewelry. A diamond may or may not last forever as some may think. I get it, whenever a woman gets engaged she will want to show anyone and everyone because that's just what they do. Sure, it is nice to show off a new ring but after so long it may or may not get old.

DeleteAfter reading the article my view has been changed by my opinion has not. "A diamond is forever" is just a saying many people use. Diamonds have been around for quite a long time and they continue to change constantly so of course they'll say it's forever. The diamond industry is an ongoing process and continuing to hold its value for the longest time, they even can clean and replace the diamond(s) for you when needed.

ReplyDeleteA ring can be very important to a girl. Something as small as a ring can have a lot of importance to a person. There are girls that like to wear rings just as an accessory but there are many girls who may wear a ring because it has some sort of significance to her. If a girl is in a relationship and her significant other gives her a ring, it is usually because they are making a promise to each other that they are in the relationship for the long run. It makes them feel as if there is trust in their relationship. A diamond ring may also be important to a girl if it was passed down from their mother or another family member. A ring can be something treasured that someone can be remembered by.
If the ring is a promise to each other, then why doesn't the man also wear one?

I never found any merit in a stone that would sit on my finger. I have been married for 15 years and the only diamond I have ever owned I inherited from my grandmother. I do not believe that there is any reason for someone to think that you have to have a diamond to get married. It is a great advertising ploy to get consumers to buy overpriced merchandise. I really don't think that guys want to get the diamond. I believe they have been conditioned to believe they are supposed to get the diamond. No one wants to spend multiple paychecks for a hunk of metal and rock that can be shown off. I believe women want them because they want to show off. Diamonds are considered a status symbol, it gives the illusion of having money. Whether you do or not.

ReplyDeleteA diamond doesnt actually last forever. Although if you receive a diamond as a gift chances are that it is going to outlive you. There is no real reason that a diamond SHOULD be a girls best friend; other than the fact that they are shiny. They are not the least bit rare or valuable. The only reason that diamonds are held in such high regard today is because back in the 30s the De Beers diamond company started running ads telling young men that if they really loved their gal that they need to buy them a diamond wedding ring. then, de beers hoarded most of the diamonds, artificially inflating the price and driving up demand.
As for why i would "want to get it for 'her'" , i wouldn't. why would i spend thousands of dollars on a practically worthless hunk of carbon?

ReplyDeleteTechnically, diamonds do not last forever. But anything can last long if you take care of it properly. When being given a diamond as a gift, it is usually a symbol to signify the relationship you have with that person. For a woman, getting a diamond from a guy is important because although materialistic objects are not the only way to show your love for someone, it is used to show off to other people that the person who gave you the diamond is yours and important to you.
